Harrison’s Big Boy Safari Room
Welcome to Harrison’s big boy bedroom! I wanted to do a room that wasn’t too “babyish” for him as he is now 5, but I still wanted it to be fun! So we decided on a safari/jungle theme for him! And I think the space is so fun, and because we did quite a bit of DIY and buying second hand, we finished his room really cheaply as well!
So the first item we picked out for him was his big boy bed! He was originally in a double and we wanted to downsize to a single so he had more room for play. I instantly fell in love with the Ikea Kura bunks… But the bargain Lou didn’t want to pay full price. So i decided to search on gumtree and facebook marketplace and found one for just $40!! I then painted the entire bed with leftover white paint we had from painting the cubby house. It took a good 3 coats of paint to get a good cover! And taa-dah, we had a bargain bed which looked brand new only costing us a total of $40!
I loved that his bed is now a bunk, the bottom level is mainly used as a quiet reading space! But we can now easily accomodate a guest/sleepover, and Hazel is alway dying to have a special sleepover in Harrison’s room! Being a low line bunk its a perfect height and also safe from the ceiling fans!
We then picked out some prints for the wall, Harrison helped me, I wanted to make sure he loved them! We both fell in love with the animals from Sailah Lane, Harrisons favourite is the Cheetah but I can’t go past that beautiful Lion! Winner Winner! I finished the wall off by using the decals we had in the play room, these matched perfectly with the prints and I was able to spread them across two walls.
Most of the things in Harrisons rooms are second hand, or brought in from the play room, he thought it was so special to get some toys in his room. So from the play room came the 8 cube unit to store a few baskets of toys and books. The toys are kept in little seagrass baskets that I purchased for $9 each from Kmart, also originally bought for the playroom. These are great for the kids to carry themselves.
I also wanted to buy him a bigger desk, he was getting too big for the toddler sized tables and was too small for an adult sized desk. Thats when I came across the amazing Ikea Flisat Desk and Stool, they both adjust between 3 sizes, so perfect for my growing boy! Plus its an amazing size to do colouring books and puzzles. (it also fits two storage boxes and a roll of paper!!) Again didn’t want to buy brand new so I found one on gumtree for just $40 which included the desk, stool, the two storage tubs and a roll of paper! BARGAIN! It is literally like new!
Now i know shopping second hand isn’t everyones cup of tea, but you can find some AMAZING things at the fraction of the price. Especially when a lot of kids things are out grown before they get too much use! Especially furniture! If its looking a little tired, a slap of paint will easily bring it back to new, and you can give it a cool new colour!
We went for a beautiful rug in a neutral tone, with an under colour of blues and greens, this just matched the jungle theme so well.
I fell instantly in love with the bedding when i had seen it, the jungle animals are just divine. And we also were gifted two beautiful soft toys which matched in perfectly, the meerkat and zebra! So beautiful.
The rest of the decor items fell in to place perfectly and will be listed below with all of the products and where to purchase!
I hope you love as much as we do! I have LOVED creating a boys space, a nice change up from all of the PINK I am used to! Haha!
